Origin Story - The Beginning

Welcome aboard, my friends! Today, let's choose to walk down the sunny side of the street. Life is full of choices, and I choose sunshine, optimism, and adventure. So, welcome aboard me hardies, whether you're birds soaring high or pirates sailing the wild seas. This is Jim Ellermeyer, your captain on this journey we call Fishing Without Bait, where we mix the ingredients of our lives into something uniquely ours.

Crafting Our Own Lives: In our kitchen of life, we aren't just finding ingredients; sometimes, we need to embark on a journey to discover them. This journey might take us down new paths, perhaps even down the rabbit hole, into realms unexplored and thrilling. Today, let's embrace a little fear, because what we're doing here isn't about finding ourselves—it's about creating ourselves. We blend the magical ingredients of synchronicity and serendipity with dashes of honesty, open-mindedness, and a willingness to experiment. So grab a paddle, and let's set sail on our pirate ship, or perhaps join the navy to cross the vast seas of possibility!

Inspired By Comics and Origin Stories: A friend of mine has rekindled my love for comics. I'm reminded of how often a stale storyline in a comic book will return to the origin story to regain its spark. Here on our 60th episode, it's not that we're running out of steam—in fact, it's quite the opposite. We're gaining momentum, impacting lives, and bringing technicolor to your world. It makes me wonder—where do my ideas originate? What crucible forged the steel that speaks to you now?

Roots in Kittanning: I was born in 1954 in Kittanning, Pennsylvania, a small town vibrant from coal mines and manufacturing at the time. My early years were spent mostly with my paternal grandparents, absorbing life lessons in a community that was tightly knit by industry and hardship. The closure of these industries left lasting marks on the town, but also taught me the value of resilience and adaptation.

A Legacy of Generosity: My grandfather was a cornerstone of our community. His generosity during the Great Depression is legendary; he fed half the town through his butcher shop. Elected as Tax Collector for 24 consecutive years in a predominantly Republican town, he was a Democrat who helped many keep their homes by paying their taxes during tough times. His open-hearted approach extended to raising his nephew's children alongside his own, embodying a spirit of communal support and unconditional love.

The Impact of Generational Generosity: The legacy of giving wasn't limited to my grandfather. My great uncle, Harry Ellermeyer, ran a department store and famously forgave all debts owed to him during the Depression, an act that bankrupted him but cemented his reputation as a man of immense kindness. Such stories of generational generosity have shaped my outlook and values deeply.

Embracing the Lessons and Looking Forward: Every holiday, our family gatherings were a testament to the bonds and values instilled by my grandparents. From these gatherings, I learned the importance of community, kindness, and being there for others, no matter the personal cost. These values are what I aim to pass along through this podcast, through every story we share and every life we touch.

So, as we continue on this journey, let's remember the power of our choices and the impact of our actions. Whether you're a bird taking flight or a pirate on the high seas, the adventure is yours to shape. Welcome aboard, and let's make it a journey to remember!
