Origin Story – Humility
For those who have been following my journey through the episodes of my podcast, you might recall how I've shared the narrative of my life: where I started, the pivotal changes, and where I stand today. My path to embracing full-impact mindfulness and the concept of "Fishing Without Bait" was not a straightforward one—it was a complex mix of tumultuous events and personal revelations. Life, as I've learned, is a continuous progression, a series of events that shape who we become, for better or for worse.
The Awakening: I vividly remember the night it all changed. I had hit rock bottom, feeling utterly depleted, a vessel waiting to be filled. I was ready for a new beginning, open to the possibilities of transformation. It was at this moment of complete emptiness that I embraced the beginner’s mind: I cleared out my old ways of thinking and prepared myself to be replenished with new insights and perspectives. This readiness for change was crucial; it was the first step toward a dramatic shift in my life.
Emergence into a New Reality: The transition wasn't instant. It involved a series of small transformations, much like a butterfly emerging from its chrysalis into a vibrant technicolor world. I learned to fly, not against the wind but with it, using its strength to propel myself forward. This marked a significant change in how I viewed life: I began making choices for myself, rather than letting others' perceptions shape my self-esteem and identity. This shift was partly inspired by the principles of 12-step recovery programs, which helped me identify and shed detrimental traits and habits.
A Humbling Revelation: One of the most profound moments came during a recovery meeting. I sat there, initially full of ego, thinking I was a rockstar among novices. However, a disheveled man who walked in, whom I initially dismissed, ended up sharing insights so profound that they left a permanent mark on me. His humble words cut through my arrogance, and for the first time in a long while, I felt a deep sense of shame—yet it was a necessary emotion that watered the arid landscape of my soul. This experience was a crucial turning point; it stripped me of my ego and replaced it with humility.
Sharing the Gift: As I continued on my path, my motivations shifted significantly. I no longer sought material success or external validation. Instead, I focused on utilizing the gifts, talents, and abilities I had been granted to benefit others. This new purpose was not about accumulating wealth or accolades but about enriching the lives of others. Each day, I strive to share the insights I've gained and hopefully, light up the path for someone else as that man did for me.
Expanding the Message through Podcasting: Eventually, my journey led me to pursue a career in clinical mental health counseling. After years in the field, I felt compelled to reach a broader audience—to spread the message of recovery and transformation beyond individual counseling sessions. Teaming up with my friend Mike, we ventured into podcasting. This platform wasn't chosen to seek fame but to share our experiences and methods, to teach others how to actively participate in their lives, showing them the way rather than just telling them.
An Invitation to Connect: I share this origin story not just as a recount of my past but as an open invitation for dialogue. I encourage everyone to engage, share your thoughts, and perhaps find parallels in your own journeys.
As we continue to navigate our paths, remember to practice kindness towards yourself and others, embrace forgiveness, and live each moment with gratitude. Until we meet again, namaste.
